What is a Pulpotomy?

Underneath the exterior of a tooth is a pocket filled with nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. This is known as the "pulp" of the tooth. When a tooth has a bad cavity, the pulp of the tooth is exposed. In this case, a pulpotomy will be performed to remove damaged pulp. Pulpotomies are a common procedure for decayed baby molars.

How is a Pulpotomy Done?

During a pulpotomy, your dentist will first remove damaged tissue and sterilize the area. Then, they'll replace the pulp with a medicated filling. Sometimes, it is necessary to place a crown to restore the structure and appearance of the tooth.

Pulpotomy FAQs

A pulpotomy can save your child's baby teeth by preventing the spread of infection and saving the tooth's roots.
A pulpotomy focuses on removing inflamed or infected pulp from a tooth's crown, whereas a root canal involves removing all of the pulp from the infected tooth. Root canals are typically only performed on adult teeth, while pulpotomies are used for baby and adult teeth.
Your dentist will determine if a pulpotomy or extraction is necessary to save one of your child's teeth. A pulpotomy may be more appropriate if there is minimal decayed pulp.
To prepare your child for a pulpotomy, explain to them what they may experience during the procedure and why it is necessary. You could even play pretend "going to the dentist" so they have an idea of what to expect.
A pulpotomy procedure typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
